Prehistoric Art
The Caves of the Massif Centrale and Southern France
Although much of the artifacts of prehistoric cultures of Europe is in the form of stone tools and carvings, we do know from discoveries in the last century that painting as an art form has its roots in the deep past.
On September 12th 1940 while hiking in the hills above their village four teenagers entered a cave in the south of France and stepped back into time.
In the connected chambers of these caves were revealed a series of paintings depicting animals long extinct in colors as vibrant as the fauvist painters of the era and a style bold and captivating.
