French Art HistoryFrom Prehistoric to ModernThe story of French Art History can hardly be told in isolation from the greater story of European Art History of which it is a part and an integral player.
But, we can see the influences and the styles of a distinctly French character. This survey of French Art History is only a brief sketch, not in any way a finished canvas. For the sake of order, this subject is divided into seven sections. These divisions are somewhat arbitrary. As in most other fields of human endeavor, we see in art a great democratization. Some argue that this has led to an immense amount of shoddy art. I like to think that it has led to an immeasurably rich pool of Artists, many of which have yet to paint their masterpiece. And so our canvas of French Art History will be divided into:
