This approach helps in getting to know the neighborhoods a little more intimately.

The Arrondissement system came into use in the 1850's with the expansion and renovation of Paris during the Second Empire of Napoleon III. This way of numbering the various areas of Paris gave a great deal of order to the City, but the names of the Quartiers dates back long before that and in many ways reflects the medieval naming of the neighborhoods.
