Map of the Area

Rue Cler is the kind of street you hope to find when you are looking for a pedestrian market street with cafés, specialty food stores and some delicacies for that picnic basket.

From the Ecole Militaire metro station, walk east on Avenue de la Motte Picquet, away from the Ecole Militaire. The first street on the left is Rue Cler.

On the corner of Rue Cler and Avenue de la Motte Piquet is a post office where you can mail off those postcards you've been carrying.

Rue Cler is a pedestrian street with a variety small shops specializing in cheeses and wine, boulangeries (bakeries), produce shops and traiteurs (caterers) where you can get prepared foods, ready to take away for a picnic, or for sitting at the sidewalk tables provided.

On the right, east side, of the street are book stores and newspaper stands. They usually have some bargains offered in the way of art and cookbooks.

The street is bright with flower shops and produce stands. Here, the produce sellers shout out their specials of the day.

If you're a cheese lover, don't miss the cheese shop on the right before you reach rue de Grenelle.

Next-door to it is a really delightful hotel, the Grand Leveque. This hotel has a well deserved reputation for friendliness, clean rooms and bargain prices.

Continue on down rue Cler until you reach rue de Grenelle. Turn right and continue past some very picturesque shops.

On the right, you will come up to the Church of St. John and an annex to the American University in Paris. Continue on just a few more blocks and you will come to Boulevard de la Tour Maubourg.

Here is the metro station La Tour Mabourg on line #8.

Cross the street and enter the Esplanade des Invalides and treat yourself to one of the great views of Paris.

With the Hôtel des Invalides, behind you, gaze down the vast expanse of the Esplanade and across the bridge Pont Alexander III. On the other side of the river is the imposing structure of the Grand Palais with its newly renovated glass roof. Opposite the Grand Palais is the Petit Palais.

Crossing this bridge and walking the few short blocks will bring you to the Avenue des Champs-Elysées.

Where the Esplanade des Invalides meets the Seine river at Quai d'Orsay you will find the RER station Invalides on line C in front of the Air France building.

Here, also, is the Metro station Invalides on Metro lines #8 and #13.
